The Orange River and the Diamond Industry
The Orange River holds a central place in the history of diamond mining.
In 1867, a 21.25-carat diamond was discovered in alluvial gravels on the banks of the Orange River near Hopetown. Later named the Eureka Diamond, this discovery confirmed the presence of diamonds far inland and sparked widespread prospecting throughout the river system.
Thousands of diamonds were subsequently recovered from the Orange River’s alluvial deposits, where natural water movement concentrated well-formed, high-quality stones. Continued exploration ultimately led to the discovery of the Kimberley diamond pipes in the early 1870s, laying the foundation for large-scale commercial diamond mining.
